Musical instruments at Daphni 1: The Lyre and the Aulos.
The Daphni Grave 2 excavation of 1981 brought to light three musical instruments (430-20 BC). Besides the frame harp, the carapace-sound box of a lyre and one pipe of a wooden aulos together with its bulb was retrieved from the grave. Although part of the wall of the tube has perished, enough survives for the original length to be established. With it, loose plaques of a tortoise carapace were collected during the excavation, and later assembled in the Peiraias Museum. Both items are on exhibit in the museum’s collection. The present paper studies the instrumental remnants, compares them with similar finds, seeks to reconstruct the original form of the instruments as much as possible, and attempts to recover the tonal behaviour of the aulos.
