Musical instruments at Daphni 2: The Harp

The remnants of what was interpreted as a harp were retrieved from the Daphni Grave 2: a wooden, boat-like “sound box” with bronze decorative elements at its “keel”, two long wooden members,
undoubtedly belonging to at least one of the other two sides of the triangular instrument, and a slender rod with 24 perceptible, equally spaced perforations, obviously for the strings to pass
through. The pieces were joined together at the Peiraias Museum, where the instrument is currently on exhibit. The find is unique in the archaeological record, as the instrument is known only from the
iconography and the literary references to it. The present paper attempts to reconstuct the instrument as much as possible to its original shape and size, classify it amongst the members of the
harp family, and investigate its acoustic behaviour.
